What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium screws, often made from titanium alloy, that serve as artificial tooth roots. These titanium posts are surgically placed into the jaw bone, providing a strong foundation for replacement teeth. The process involves bone healing, where the bone bonds with the titanium screws, creating a stable anchor for implant-supported replacement teeth.

Once the healing process is complete, an implant abutment is attached, which serves as a connector for the prosthetic teeth, such as a dental crown, implant-supported bridges, or implant-supported dentures. Dental implants are a popular and effective alternative to conventional or removable dentures, offering a permanent solution for missing teeth.

Benefits Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer numerous advantages over conventional replacement options. They provide a natural look and feel, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. Unlike removable prostheses, dental implants are fixed in place, eliminating the risk of slippage or discomfort. They also help prevent bone loss, maintain your facial structure, and support adjacent teeth. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a cost-effective solution for long-term oral health.

Furthermore, dental implants preserve the natural tooth structure of nearby teeth, as they do not require the alteration of adjacent teeth, unlike a dental bridge. This ensures that your remaining natural teeth stay healthy and intact. Dental implants also improve oral hygiene, as they are easier to clean and maintain compared to traditional dentures. Regular dental checkups and proper oral hygiene practices, including daily dental floss use, are essential for ensuring long-term success.

The top benefits of dental implants include:

  1. Natural look and feel
  2. Improved functionality
  3. Enhanced oral health
  4. Long-term durability
  5. Preservation of facial structure
  6. Protection of nearby teeth
  7. Enhanced speech
  8. Improved comfort
  9. Increased self-esteem
  10. Ability to enjoy favorite foods

Who Is a Candidate For Dental Implants?

Ideal candidates for dental implants generally have healthy gum tissue and adequate bone in the jaw to support the implant post. A consultation appointment with our oral surgeon will determine your suitability for implant procedures. During this initial visit, we will assess your oral health status, medical conditions, and health issues to ensure you are suitable for treatment.

In some cases, bone grafting may be necessary to increase the quantity of bone for successful implants. We will discuss your treatment plan, including any additional procedures, and address any concerns you may have. Patients with acute illness or uncontrolled periodontal disease may not be ideal candidates.

Dental Implant Procedures

The implant process begins with a comprehensive consultation at our dental office. During this initial visit, your oral health status will be assessed, and a personalized treatment plan will be developed. Advanced imaging techniques, such as 3D scans, will be used to evaluate the quantity of bone and vital structures. If bone grafting is required, this separate procedure will be performed before implant placement.

On the day of surgery, anesthesia will be administered to ensure your comfort. Small incisions will be made in the gum tissue to expose the jaw bone. Titanium screws, serving as artificial tooth roots, will be carefully placed into the bone at precise locations. The gum tissue will be sutured closed, and a healing period will commence. Temporary teeth or temporary dentures may be provided to maintain aesthetics and function during this period.

During the healing phase, osseointegration occurs, where the bone bonds with the titanium screws, creating a stable foundation for your replacement teeth. This process typically takes several months. Regular visits will be scheduled to monitor the healing process and ensure implant success.

Once osseointegration is complete, a second minor procedure will be performed to attach implant abutments to the implants. Abutments serve as connectors between the implants and the final dental prosthesis. Impressions will be taken to create custom-made dental crowns, implant-supported bridges, or implant-supported dentures that will be attached to the abutments. These prosthetic teeth will be carefully crafted to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, ensuring a confident and natural smile.

Types of Anesthesia

We offer several forms of anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

The cost of dental implants varies depending on several factors:

  • Extent of treatment required
  • Number of missing teeth
  • Type of implants used
  • Need for bone grafting or other additional procedures
  • Complexity of the surgical procedures
  • Type of dental prosthesis (dental crown, implant-supported bridges, implant-supported denture)
  • Dental insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs

It is important to discuss dental care costs with your dental care provider during your initial visit.

"Hi, I'm Kim from Mishawaka and I came to see Dr. Anderson to get dental implants. I found the staff to be very warm and welcoming. My doctor, as a person, I felt very comfortable. I felt heard. He took time to listen to me, to listen to my questions. The procedure went very well and it was just a very easy recovery. My overall experience has been fantastic. I would highly recommend Granger Oral Surgery. They're taking very good care of me."

"I had to have the oral surgery due to a tooth that was cracked. There was a reoccurring infection; that was when we realized things were probably beyond the point where they could repair that tooth. For the surgery implant itself, it actually went very quickly — I think even more quickly than the first one that I had done. Dr. Anderson is just very friendly, I think kind of a patient-oriented kind of doctor. Overall, yes, I did have a good experience. They made me feel very relaxed. There was no pain involved. I would certainly recommend Granger Oral Surgery."

"I came to see Dr. Anderson because I had two teeth that had been given root canals that had crowns on them. Yeah, I was a little nervous; I initially came in just for a consultation. He actually said, "You know, everything looks great, and if you're interested, we can do that implant for you today." The procedure was very simple; I've had three or four root canals, and that was actually much easier and less painful than the root canal, so it was good. Oh, the staff here is great; everybody has been very helpful, from scheduling my meetings to explaining what's going to be done and how it's going to happen, and what needs to take place, and what the costs are. You're certainly informed by the time you make a decision. Dr. Anderson's an interesting guy; he's very friendly, got a lot of personality. If you have to have a procedure like this done, and you need an implant or a tooth replaced, I think that Dr. Anderson and his staff do a great job, and I would recommend them, yes."

"I'd lost a couple of teeth and wanted to have the implants because there's not really other solutions dental-wise for these issues. They make you feel so comfortable here, everybody is really nice, and then everybody answers every question. One of the things—and my husband mentioned this too—about Dr. Anderson is his ability to explain more complicated procedures to you and to answer any question you have. He's with you; you almost feel like there's nothing else in that room when he's talking to you. He can put you at ease so quickly. Well, after I'd had the first part of my implant, my mom needed a tooth extraction; we had her come here—she's 86 years old. And then, just a couple weeks ago, our 10-day-old baby grandson wasn't nursing correctly and a lactation specialist said he needed a laser surgery to loosen some of the muscles here, and we brought him to Dr. Anderson near South Bend. So, the oldest member of my family and the youngest member of my family—plus myself—have all had spectacular surgery results with the team here at Granger Oral Surgery."

"I initially had a crown with a root canal. After several years, the tooth fractured, and he removed the fractured tooth and placed an implant, which was the greatest thing. I didn't have any problems with it. It was a wonderful adventure. The surgery went terrific. I was local anesthetic. There was no pain, no upset, and I have never had a problem with it since I had it put in. I had a wonderful experience here. Dr. Anderson is a wonderful oral surgeon — very, very calm, very caring, very compassionate, works the best to give you the utmost best treatment. Anybody would be happy to come here. The staff is wonderful, Dr. Anderson is there for you, and I had a very pleasant visit. I highly recommend Granger Oral Surgery."
